HASTe BC Fall Newsletter 2012

School's back in, but the weather seems not to have gotten the memo! If we all keep walking and riding like it's mid-August, maybe Fall will take 2012 off.

Hello! and welcome to the Fall 2012 Edition of the HASTe newsletter. If you're receiving this, you've either signed up for our newsletter or are someone who we're pretty sure would be interested in occasional updates about the HASTe project and the resources it offers. Newsletters will be released every few months, but you can always check the website for up-to-date listings of news, events and webinars on active and sustainable transportation for school communities.

HASTe at ProWalk ProBike Conference

Every two years, Safe Route to School USA convenes at a National conference to share their best practices and lessons learned. Lucky for HASTe, we not only got to learn from our neighbours to the South, but also had the opportunity to showcase BC’s very own fantastic programs and initiatives! HASTe’s  Community Programs Manager, Kerry Hamilton spent 3 days in Long Beach learning and sharing with peers: read about her experiences here.

Vancouver and Surrey step up

The Cities of Vancouver and Surrey are partnering with HASTe and joining BC's list of School Travel Planning (STP) communities.
In Vancouver, STP will form the backbone of the City's School Active and Safe Transportation Planning program. Led by the City's Traffic Safety Working Group and facilitated by HASTe, the program will involve six VSB schools in 2012/3. In Surrey, HASTe takes over the facilitation role previously provided by the City, and adds Cool Routes to School programming at two elementary schools.

Happy iWALK Day!

Registration is closed, iWALK packages have been sent out, and schools across BC are gearing up for iWALK. But if your school missed the boat, it's not too late: iWALK goes all month long! Visit the HASTe website to download materials and resource sheets to help plan your school's iWALK activitiy.
A big thank-you to VanCity for funding HASTE's Cool Routes to School program and Best Route maps at 2 elementary schools in Surrey this year.

Foot Painted Tree Crossing

In China, a unique colaboration creates a beautiful illustration of how walking can have a small but powerful environmental impact. See how 3.92 million leaves unfolded here.

Free Transit for Metro Vancouver students during iWALK

Remember teachers: students travel for free on TransLink during iWALK week - making it the perfect time to organize a public-transit-powered field trip.

Bike Pool makes a Splash

More than 40 students at Glenbrook Middle School in New Westminster BC participated in the first full scale Bike Pool pilot program in North America. The Glenbrook Bike Pool program is a partnership between HASTe and HUB, and is the logical next step after cycling skills and safety training; kids on the cusp of riding to school independently or with groups of friends get on-road experience and are introduced to best-routes in a safe, fun environment, chaperoned by trained instructors for a week on bike trips to and from school.
