Route Planning for Safety

One key traffic safety consideration is the route that a walking or cycling group will choose for the trip to school. In many circumstances, the best route for a pedestrian or a cyclist will differ from the route a driver would choose to travel from a neighbourhood to a local school.

For this reason we have developed guidelines for mapping and choosing a best route for a neighbourhood group planning to walk or cycle to school. These best routes can be determined for an entire school community: as routes are established from the various neighbourhoods where families live, they can be mapped and communicated to your entire school population.

The goal of identifying a Best Route is to establish and choose the route that best suits the mode chosen, and to reduce the risk for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

HASTE's online Walking/Cycling Route Planning Tool can help you plan your walking or cycling routes to and from school, and produce and share finalized routes with your school community. To learn more about the route planner or try it out, go here.
